When a hedgehog is judged, there are a multiple things the judge will be looking at to decide how to place your hedgehog.
Primary consideration to the ranking is to be based on temperament of the hedgehog when handled by the judge. Hightest ranking is be to given to the hedgehog thatis the most friendly and relaxed. This is to be evalated by the hedgehog's lack of rolling or speed in unrolling, relaxed position of the body quills, and relaxed position of the forehead quills. Verbalization of the hedgehog (huffing, popping, clicking, ect.) is not preferred, but it is not significantly damaging to ranking if verbalization is made by a hedgehog with completely relaxed quills.
Secondly consideration to ranking is to be based on physical appearence of the hedgehog. Hedgehog's form should be smooth and flowing, with no obvious dips or humps. Face should be symmetrical, evenly balanced, and proportional to the body. Short, wide facial structure is to be perferred over long narrow face. Hedgehog's cleanliness, grooming, and general healthy appearance is also to be taken into account in physical appearance.
Third consideration to ranking is to based on quill color, pattern, and quality. Richness of color and width color band is to be preferred over narrow bands of faded color. Richness is to be evaluated based on individual hedgehog's base color, with lighter colors not to be discounted. Evenness of pattern is to be considered in pinto or snowflake classes. Dense and even quills coat is to be perferred over a thin or patchy quill coat. Shorter thicker quills are perferred over long thin quills.
Recommended order of classes is Junior Male, Adult Male, Senior Male,Junior Female, Adult Female, Senior Female, Best of Show. In each category, color classes will be complete seperately, then the winner of each class will complete for Best of Class, such as Best Adult Male. This is a Non-Handled Format Show-Hedgehogs for each class will be placed on the judging table in Large Kritter Keepers known as "Show Cases" (you may use the same show case for different hedgehogs as long as they are in different classes) . Entries by individual owner or breeder are not limited. Each individual entry will be identified only by an ID number, not by breeder or owner. Owners will step away from the judging table after check in of each hedgehog. The judge will remove each hedgehog from its cage one at a time, providing proper sanitizing of self and judging area between each individual. After evaluation, judge will return hedgehog to it's cage. All animals will be retrieved by owner at end of class. Hedgehogs eligible for best of class, best of show will be brought to another table and displayed by owner until the judging of these classes are through.
